Environment Health and Safety Lead
George is an EHS management systems and compliance expert with extensive experience in developing global auditing processes, standards and management systems for operational excellence. He has hands on experience implementing EHS procedures and programs at chemical, steel and other manufacturing facilities, and has learned what works in practice, and what doesn’t. With Malk, George has applied his practical knowledge in reviewing environmental and safety programs, and has helped develop recommendations for improving EHS management systems.
Prior to working with Malk, George worked with the Brazilian steel-manufacturing company Gerdau assessing safety performance and training plant leadership, for Bayer as an environmental engineer, EHS management systems, compliance, product safety and LCA program manager, and at Exxon as a refinery process engineer. His environmental work has included plant and corporate-wide multi-media regulatory compliance and waste reduction, soils and groundwater remediation, dispersion modeling, air emissions permitting and management systems implementation. His safety work has covered assessment of several dozen plant safety cultures, including practices for physical, administrative and behavioral aspects, developing corrective actions for improvement, and implementing safety management systems and associated procedures.
George has applied his environmental and safety skills globally, living in Taiwan while developing an environmental impact analysis for a major chemical plant project, and living in Germany while developing a global EHS assessment and improvement process. He has conducted EHS audits including ISO 14001 gap analyses at numerous manufacturing sites in Europe, Asia, North and South America. He is a co-inventor of two 2017 patents applied for, whereby chemical manufacturing wastes can be used in commercial coatings. He is also a regular guest lecturer on LCA/safety topics at Carnegie Mellon and other universities.
George’s education includes B.Sc. degrees in Chemical Engineering and Biology along with a graduate Safety Engineering Certificate from the University of Pittsburgh, and a M.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
He enjoys baseball, traveling and learning foreign languages.
